Stockout

When sellable stock hits zero and you cannot fulfil demand.

Definition

A stockout is when available inventory cannot meet demand. Soft stockouts include stranded FBA units or unallocated warehouse stock that never reached the channel.

Worked example

A SKU sells 25/day with 5 days left and a PO still 12 days out → stockout unless you expedite, transfer, or substitute.

Why it matters for replenishment

Stockouts lose ads efficiency, rank and customers. Measuring stockout days also corrupts average sales if you do not exclude them from forecasts.

How OmniRestock uses this

OmniRestock projects stockout dates per SKU and can alert via email, Slack or Teams before you run out.

Common questions

Do stockout days bias forecasts?

Yes if you average “zero sales” days as true demand. Exclude or impute them.

Is marketplace “inactive” the same?

Often caused by stockouts or listing issues — check inventory first.

How do open POs affect stockout dates?

In OmniRestock, open POs add stock on order so dates move out instead of double-suggesting.

Is a stockout the same everywhere?

The idea is shared, but formulas and marketplace rules differ. Use the definition on this page for ecommerce replenishment.

Do I need software to track a stockout?

A spreadsheet works for a few SKUs. Once you have many suppliers or channels, a replenishment tool keeps the numbers current.

Does OmniRestock change my live stock?

Not unless you switch Stock write or Purchase orders on for a connection. Drafts stay drafts until you confirm.
