Overstock

More inventory than you reasonably need for demand and cover targets.

Definition

Overstock is inventory above your target cover or sales plan — cash and space tied up in units unlikely to sell in time. It often follows optimistic forecasts, MOQ pressure or missed seasonality.

Worked example

Target 60 days of cover but a SKU sits at 180 days with flat velocity → overstock. Options: pause reorders, promote, bundle, or liquidate before peak storage fees.

Why it matters for replenishment

Overstock hides in “we might need it” until aged storage, dead stock and write-downs arrive.

How OmniRestock uses this

OmniRestock’s replenishment view helps you see long-cover SKUs so you can stop reordering them while still protecting sellers that are short.

Common questions

When does overstock become dead stock?

When sell-through stalls and there is no credible plan to move units before ageing or season end.

Can MOQs cause overstock?

Yes — order the MOQ only when the cover impact is acceptable.

Does FBA punish overstock?

Aged inventory surcharges and IPI pressure make excess FBA stock expensive.

Is overstock the same everywhere?

The idea is shared, but formulas and marketplace rules differ. Use the definition on this page for ecommerce replenishment.

Do I need software to track overstock?

A spreadsheet works for a few SKUs. Once you have many suppliers or channels, a replenishment tool keeps the numbers current.

Does OmniRestock change my live stock?

Not unless you switch Stock write or Purchase orders on for a connection. Drafts stay drafts until you confirm.
