Dead stock

Inventory with little or no realistic demand left.

Definition

Dead stock is inventory that is not selling and is unlikely to sell at an acceptable margin — obsolete, wrong variant, expired season, or failed launch. It is overstock’s end state.

Worked example

A colourway sold 2 units in 90 days with 400 on hand and no traffic → treat as dead stock: exit via promo, bundle, outlet or removal rather than reordering.

Why it matters for replenishment

Dead stock blocks cash and warehouse space you need for SKUs that do sell. On FBA it also drags inventory health.

Common questions

Is slow stock always dead?

No. Long-lead staples can look slow between buys. Dead means no credible demand path.

Should I include dead stock in forecasts?

Keep history for learning, but do not replenish it.

Removal vs markdown?

Compare removal/liquidation fees with margin from a controlled sale.

Is dead stock the same everywhere?

The idea is shared, but formulas and marketplace rules differ. Use the definition on this page for ecommerce replenishment.

Do I need software to track dead stock?

A spreadsheet works for a few SKUs. Once you have many suppliers or channels, a replenishment tool keeps the numbers current.

Does OmniRestock change my live stock?

Not unless you switch Stock write or Purchase orders on for a connection. Drafts stay drafts until you confirm.
