Order-by date

The calendar date by which you should place the next PO.

Definition

Order-by date is when you must place a purchase order so that, given lead time, stock arrives before the projected stockout. It is the date form of a reorder point.

Formula

Order-by date ≈ stockout date − lead time in days
(With safety stock baked into the stockout projection)

Worked example

Stockout projected 12 June, lead time 35 days → order by about 8 May. Miss that date and you burn safety stock or go dark.

Why it matters for replenishment

Buyers work from calendars and supplier cut-offs. A date is easier to act on than a unit threshold alone.

How OmniRestock uses this

OmniRestock produces order-by dates per SKU from forecast, lead time and safety stock, and can surface them in alerts and calendars.

Common questions

Is order-by the same as delivery date?

No. Order-by is when you place the PO; delivery is when stock becomes sellable.

What moves the order-by date?

Faster sales, longer lead times, lower safety stock or delayed open POs.

Can I put order-by dates on a calendar?

Yes — Google and Outlook calendar integrations are in launch scope on OmniRestock.

Is order-by date the same everywhere?

The idea is shared, but formulas and marketplace rules differ. Use the definition on this page for ecommerce replenishment.

Do I need software to track order-by date?

A spreadsheet works for a few SKUs. Once you have many suppliers or channels, a replenishment tool keeps the numbers current.

Does OmniRestock change my live stock?

Not unless you switch Stock write or Purchase orders on for a connection. Drafts stay drafts until you confirm.
