Lead time

Days from deciding to order until stock is sellable again.

Definition

Lead time is the full door-to-door delay: supplier production, transit, customs, 3PL receiving and put-away — until units are available to sell. Using only ocean transit days understates risk and makes reorder points too low.

Worked example

Factory 10 days + ocean 28 + customs 4 + 3PL receive/put-away 3 = 45 days door-to-door. If you only counted 28, you reorder too late.

Why it matters for replenishment

Lead time multiplies daily demand in the reorder point. Understated lead time is a top cause of stockouts on imported goods.

How OmniRestock uses this

OmniRestock uses supplier lead times when it builds stockout and order-by dates and when it sizes replenishment suggestions.

Common questions

Should lead time include receiving?

Yes, until stock is sellable. Customs and put-away count.

What if lead time varies?

Use a realistic typical value and cover spikes with safety stock, or track variability explicitly.

Is FBA transfer lead time separate?

Yes. Supplier lead time and FBA inbound transit are different legs — plan both.

Is lead time the same everywhere?

The idea is shared, but formulas and marketplace rules differ. Use the definition on this page for ecommerce replenishment.

Do I need software to track lead time?

A spreadsheet works for a few SKUs. Once you have many suppliers or channels, a replenishment tool keeps the numbers current.

Does OmniRestock change my live stock?

Not unless you switch Stock write or Purchase orders on for a connection. Drafts stay drafts until you confirm.
