Safety stock

Extra units held to cover demand or lead-time surprises.

Definition

Safety stock is buffer inventory above expected lead-time demand. Simple methods use days of cover; statistical methods use a service factor (Z), demand variability and lead time. Too little causes stockouts; too much ties up cash.

Formula

Safety stock ≈ Z × σ(daily demand) × √(lead time in days)
(Simple alternative: average daily demand × buffer days)

Worked example

σ(daily demand)=4, lead time=25 days, Z≈1.65 (~95%). Safety stock ≈ 1.65 × 4 × √25 ≈ 33 units.

Why it matters for replenishment

Without a buffer, any late container or viral day turns into a stockout during the exact window your PO is already in transit.

Common questions

Is safety stock the same as reorder point?

No. Safety stock is the buffer. Reorder point = lead-time demand + safety stock.

What Z should I use?

Common service levels use Z≈1.28 (90%), 1.65 (95%), 2.33 (99%). Higher Z means more stock.

Does seasonality change safety stock?

Yes. Use recent or seasonal variability, not a quiet month, before a peak.

Is safety stock the same everywhere?

The idea is shared, but formulas and marketplace rules differ. Use the definition on this page for ecommerce replenishment.

Do I need software to track safety stock?

A spreadsheet works for a few SKUs. Once you have many suppliers or channels, a replenishment tool keeps the numbers current.

Does OmniRestock change my live stock?

Not unless you switch Stock write or Purchase orders on for a connection. Drafts stay drafts until you confirm.
