Service-level formula

OmniRestock’s safety stock guide recommends the service-level formula for most ecommerce SKUs. The older max−average shortcut usually overstocks.

Safety stock = Z × σdemand × √lead time

  • Z — from your service level (e.g. 1.65 ≈ 95%).
  • σ — standard deviation of demand per day (or per week if lead time is in weeks).
  • Lead time — in the same time unit as σ.

Example (not your result): Z 1.65 × σ 4 × √21 ≈ 30 units.

Why not max − average?

Max daily sales × max lead time − average daily sales × average lead time pads every SKU for the worst day and the worst supplier delay at once. That often ties up cash in slow movers. Use it only when you lack enough history to estimate σ.
