EXW

Ex Works — seller makes goods available at their premises; buyer does the rest.

Definition

EXW (Ex Works) under Incoterms 2020 means the seller makes the goods available at a named place (often the factory). The buyer arranges loading (unless otherwise agreed), export clearance, main freight, insurance and import. It is usually the least inclusive seller obligation.

Worked example

EXW Dongguan: you book the forwarder to collect at the factory, handle export docs, ocean freight and UK import. Your landed cost stack starts at the factory gate.

Why it matters for replenishment

EXW quotes look cheap per unit but push almost all logistics cost and delay onto you — underestimating lead time is easy.

Common questions

Is EXW good for new importers?

Often painful — export formalities fall on the buyer. FCA is frequently cleaner.

Does the seller load the truck under EXW?

Not obliged to under the rule; agree loading in the contract if needed.

EXW vs FOB?

FOB adds getting goods on board a vessel at origin; EXW stops earlier.

Is EXW the same everywhere?

The idea is shared, but formulas and marketplace rules differ. Use the definition on this page for ecommerce replenishment.

Do I need software to track EXW?

A spreadsheet works for a few SKUs. Once you have many suppliers or channels, a replenishment tool keeps the numbers current.

Does OmniRestock change my live stock?

Not unless you switch Stock write or Purchase orders on for a connection. Drafts stay drafts until you confirm.
