Demand forecasting

Estimating future sales so you can buy and transfer stock in time.

Definition

Demand forecasting predicts units you will sell over future days or weeks. Ecommerce forecasts should handle seasonality, stockout gaps and channel mix. The forecast feeds reorder points, PO sizes and FBA transfers.

Worked example

A SKU averages 20/day but spikes every November. A seasonal method lifts December demand so you place the ocean PO in September, not when ads are already live.

Why it matters for replenishment

Buying from last week’s average alone fails on seasonality and recoveries after stockouts.

How OmniRestock uses this

OmniRestock runs twelve statistical methods with per-SKU backtests, then uses the forecast for stockout dates and replenishment suggestions. The AI assistant explains numbers; it does not silently change stock.

Common questions

Is forecasting the same as a reorder point?

Forecast feeds the reorder point; ROP also needs lead time and safety stock.

Does OmniRestock use AI to forecast?

Automatic forecasting backtests statistical methods. The AI assistant is separate and explains or drafts actions for approval.

What history do I need?

More clean history helps; new SKUs need proxies or manual overrides.

Is demand forecasting the same everywhere?

The idea is shared, but formulas and marketplace rules differ. Use the definition on this page for ecommerce replenishment.

Do I need software to track demand forecasting?

A spreadsheet works for a few SKUs. Once you have many suppliers or channels, a replenishment tool keeps the numbers current.

Does OmniRestock change my live stock?

Not unless you switch Stock write or Purchase orders on for a connection. Drafts stay drafts until you confirm.
