ASN

Advance Shipping Notice — electronic heads-up of a delivery.

Definition

An ASN (advance shipping notice) tells a warehouse what is arriving before the truck does — SKUs, quantities, cartons and references. It speeds receiving and reduces miscounts versus blind receipts.

Worked example

Your supplier or freight forwarder sends an ASN for PO-1042: 20 cartons, three SKUs. The 3PL pre-creates the goods-in and books a bay before arrival.

Why it matters for replenishment

Without ASNs, receiving lead time stretches and sellable stock appears later than your reorder maths assumed.
